PHILIPPINE Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) has tapped
British Telecom (BT) to assist the phone giant in its
transformation to a new generation communications
company.
“We have actually engaged with the
advisory group of British Telecom to help us plan the
transition on NGN [new generations network],” said PLDT
chairman Manuel Pangilinan.
The group of NGN experts has been
assisting the phone firm for two months now and a study
is being hammered out determine how long the migration
from a so-called legacy system to an NGN will take
place.
Pangilinan said PLDT wants to learn from
the experiences of BT, one of the world’s leading
providers of communications solutions and services
operating in 170 countries.
BT is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BT
Group plc, and encompasses virtually all businesses and
assets of the BT Group. BT Group plc is listed on stock
exchanges in London and New York.
“They are here for about two months
already advising us on their own experience in terms of
their migration from legacy to NGN. They took three
years to complete their migration to NGN,” said Pa-ngilinan.
In PLDT’s case, it will not yet be known
when it would be fully upgrade to an all-Internet
protocol NGN until the study’s conclusion. “Once the
study is concluded, maybe by end of the year, we will
have a better idea on how long it will take. We will
start to feel the full impact of the NGN migration by
2009. That’s what the NGN team is also doing now. They
have to look at the overall situation,” said Pangilinan.
