    Coaches’ Code of Conduct

A few people may not be aware of it, but there is such thing as a coaches’ Code of Conduct. This is a set of standards and guidelines after which coaches must pattern behavior in mentoring basketball.

Of course, each coach is entitled to his own style of handling the team. I mean, what works for one may not work for another. There are players who are more attuned to a volatile-headed coach than a cool, calm and collected mentor.

But, of course, it’s a free-for-all as the Code of Conduct will be a necessary document from now. This will be important as we establish the coaching profession to a higher degree in the Philippines through seminars and licenses to up its standards.

To those who are interested on what the code is all about, please read on:

    a) Coaches should be role models and educators for the players, and community and coaches should take care of their status and reputation.

    b) Coaches should build reputation among players, their parents and means of public information with their knowledge, effort and behavior.

    c) Coaches shall conduct themselves in a manner that reinforces their place as leaders and role models and encourage positive communication between themselves and players, referees, administrators and general public.

    d) Coaches shall at all times conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the spirit of fair play and sporting behavior. They shall give due regard to the authority of officials and the rights of opponents, spectators and others.

    e) Coaches shall not give, make, issue, authorize or endorse any public statement which would damage best interest of the game of basketball.

    f) Coaches should avoid audible obscenity, obscene gestures verbal or physical abusing officials, opponents, spectators or other persons related to the sport of basketball.

    g) Coaches should respect the rights of others to hold values, attitudes and opinions that differ from their own.

    h) Coaches shall perform their duties on the bases of careful preparation and be reasonable in demands on players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.

    i) Coaches’ instructions should be current,  accurate and appropriate and those instructions should be based on the related education and best practices. Coaches should give due consideration about players’ age, height, skills, physical maturity, health and safety.

    j) Coaches should take active role in prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse.

    k) Coaches must submit their CV to the Coaches Association with precise data on their education, qualification and working experience.

    l) Coaches must cooperate with Coaches Association and give contribution toward  further development of coaches.

After reading, I’m sure you might know a coach or two who is not exactly following these. It is very important to learn these principles to heart in the coaching profession as those who will disobey it will be subject to disciplinary measures set by the Coaches Association.
