    A Bridesmaid’s ’27 Dresses’

FROM the pen of The Devil Wears Prada author Aline Brosh McKenna comes 27 Dresses, the latest fashion romantic comedy to fall for starring Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy, Knocked Up).

The movie marches on with Jane (Heigl), a romantic and perennial bridesmaid whose own happy ending is nowhere in sight.  But when her sister Tess (Malin Akerman) enlists her to be a bridesmaid yet again, the request is particularly painful as Jane is madly in love with her fiancé George (Ed Burns) and has to help plan their wedding.

Able to make a balance between her small- and big-screen stints, Heigl describes her character in 27 Dresses as the kind of girl who can never say no to people and has walked down the aisles 27 times but has yet to say “I do.”

According to a report, Heigl says half the fun of the movie was being able to sport all her different bridesmaid looks: “We did one full day of this montage sequence where I try on every dress my character has ever worn, from a Gone With the Wind-themed wedding—so I had the whole hoop skirt and a bonnet—to a cowgirl bridesmaid’s dress, to a sari, to a kimono...everything!”

27 Dresses is Heigl’s big follow-up to the $150-million success of Knocked Up. Julia Roberts is, of course, the queen of wedding-flavored romantic comedies, from My Best Friend’s Wedding to Runaway Bride, and Heigl just could be next in line.

“There is sort of no greater honor for somebody like me, who has wanted my entire life to do just romantic comedies and be Julia Roberts,” says Heigl. “It’s a real honor to even be mentioned in the same sentence.”  From reel to real, Heigl will soon be saying “I do” to musician Josh Kelley.

27 Dresses opens in January 2008 from 20th Century Fox, to be distributed by Warner Bros.
