    If it fits, then it’s a CX-9

    By Ira V. Panganiban

SO, you want to go take your whole family on an outing. Or you want to bring the gang to the latest resort you just discovered. Unfortunately, there’s seven of you and you’re the only one who drives!

Well, fret no more. Mazda just came out with a crossover that easily fits seven, and your baggage to boot!

The all-new Mazda CX-9 is a stylish, seven-passenger crossover SUV that gives the promise of an exhilarating drive. Introduced at the Mazda showroom in Makati last week, the CX-9 looks pretty sleek and stylish.

Mazda says the CX-9 carries the “Soul of a Sportscar” signature, which deftly blends a sporty driving spirit with the versatility of a multiseater SUV. Mazda says the CX-9 was recently adjudged the 2008 Motor Trend Magazine Sport Utility of the Year.

“The Mazda CX-9 is a new-generation SUV that breathes life to our Zoom-Zoom promise. Stylish, insightful and spirited, the Mazda CX-9 combines practicality with an awesome driving experience. It is a vehicle for those who want it all—style, power, precision, quality and safety,” said Eric Malimban, AVP-Mazda Philippines.

The Mazda CX-9 has a sleek silhouette, a welcome break from the traditional boxy SUVs crowding the streets. It has slanted headlamps and steeply angled windscreens that inject the Mazda CX-9 with a sporty look. Bulging fenders, 20-inch aluminum wheels and a dual chrome exhaust pipe jacks up the CX-9’s spirited factor.

And inside, the Mazda CX-9 exceeds expectations. The steering-wheel tilt and the multiway seat adjustment allow drivers of all sizes to drive comfortably. For passengers, the 2,875-mm wheelbase, one of the longest in the Mazda CX-9’s segment, guarantees more than ample legroom. The second- and third-row seats can be easily folded in case additional room is needed for more cargo.

Suspension-wise, Metro Manila’s potholes will feel less obtrusive because of the all-independent suspension. Double door seals and sound-deadening foam result in low noise levels, which could only be found previously in high-end sedans.

Under the hood, an all-new 3.7-liter V6 engine powers the Mazda CX-9, and quick acceleration and high fuel mileage is made possible by a six-speed Activematic.

All this power is matched by a full complement of safety features. In case of extreme maneuvers, the antilock brake system, traction-control system and wheel-speed sensors help restore the Mazda CX-9 to an even keel.

Roll Stability Control reduces rollover risk without compromising the SUV-like commanding line of vision and, for good measure, a Dynamic Stability Control automatically applies one or more brakes to over- or understeer during emergencies.

So we have speed, stability, style and space. I guess the only thing left is the drive!

    Positioned for practical performance

WHEN one thinks of the Subaru Impreza, what comes to mind is a compact four-door sedan that is more track-day toy than everyday tourer. This is best exemplified by the 2005   to 2007 models, which you can pull crazily in the first three gears and lean on the throttle or the brakes on hard turns.
