  • Exports of coco products
    down in August

    THE country’s export of various coconut products for August went down by 9.7 percent to 147,403 metric tons (MT) in copra terms year-on-year, data from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) showed.

    On the other hand, local traders picked up better prices for their produce as gross export receipts went up by 34.1 percent to $95.57 million for the period.

    Exports of major coconut products for August depicted mixed trends, with copra meal and oleochemicals posting increases in shipments.

    Copra meal shipment increased by 36.1 percent to 22,103 MT, while oleochemicals grew 1.7 percent to 10,553 MT. In contrast, coconut oil (CNO) shipments fell by 10 percent to 75,931 MT from 83,993 MT in August last year.

    Shipments of CNO for January to August went down by 32.8 percent to 506,897 MT during the period. Copra meal shipments also went down by 14.75 percent to 244,801 MT.

    For January to August, exports of coconut products reached a little over one million MT (MMT) in copra terms or almost 29 percent lower than the 1.41 MMT exported in the same period a year ago.

    Exports of other coconut products like oleochemicals, coco shell charcoal and fresh coconuts also went down. Only glycerin posted an increase.

    Top buyers of crude coconut oil in August were the United States, Europe, China and Japan. The US was also the primary destination for cochin oil, a refined and bleached oil.

    South Korea was the biggest buyer of copra meal in August, accounting for 62.7 percent of total shipments, followed by  Vietnam, Australia and Hong Kong, China.
