  • ‘Outrage’ over rape, not
    poverty, killed Mariannet?

DAVAO CITY—The poor girl who hanged herself here and whose death triggered a national discussion on poverty was raped, initial results of the autopsy conducted on her Thursday indicated.

Dr. Tomas Dimaandal, the city medico-legal officer here, told reporters that Mariannet Amper, 12, suffered multiple lacerations on her vagina and said that this was caused by the insertion of a hard object, “probably a penis.”

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who called a news briefing late Thursday, said that he has ordered a “deeper investigation” into the case but clarified that he has not held the father, Isabelo Amper, as a suspect.

Nonetheless, the police would invite the father “to explain why he and the rest of the family failed to report the incident to the police.”

“Mariannet Amper did not die because of poverty. She died because of outrage,” Duterte said.

He also appealed to the people, including media organizations, to refrain from towing on the issue of poverty as the cause of Amper’s suicide.

Supt. Matthew Baccay, chief of the Talomo Police Station here, had earlier said that the young girl was found hanging inside their house on November 2 “but the family reported it only on November 6.”

The family reported it to the police in order to get her death certificate, he said Baccay went to Amper’s residence in Purok 11, Yñiguez Subdivision, to “invite” the father to the police station to explain his side.
