IT’S hard to believe but Shaina Magdayao just turned 18 recently. While she looks her age, the fact that we’ve been watching her for almost a decade now would make you think that the young actress is 72!

Shaina at 18 has definitely achieved a lot of things that actresses twice her age can only aspire to. Despite this, she remains a level-headed girl who just wants to do good in her life and in her career.

Recently, it was announced that Shaina will form a love triangle with Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual in an upcoming teleserye.

Congratulations on getting a plum role in the Angel-Piolo teleserye. How does it feel? Are you scared to take on such a challenge?

I’ve always been up for any challenge in my life, although I have to admit I’m nervous, but I’m really looking forward to it.

Your role is quite mature and far from the usual you’ve portrayed. Considering you’ve never had a boyfriend, how do you plan to approach your role?

I trust my directors in the teleserye and Piolo and Angel are really talented people. I know I can learn a lot from them. I also plan to study and develop my character very well.

Maybe you should have a boyfriend. Speaking of which, the last time we talked you admitted Rayver (Cruz) was courting you. So where are you now?

Rayver is one of my closest friends in the business. As I said, we got past the getting-to-know-you stage and he is still courting me. Time will tell, I guess. I’m really not the type that if someone courts me, I’ll say yes right away. I’m really not in a hurry.

Is Rayver still “special” to you?

What I like most about Rayver is that he knows me inside and out. I’m a moody person and he knows how to make me feel better. He knows how to make me laugh and he is very thoughtful and sweet to me.

    What about John Prats?

Well, we go out and I’ll admit it for the first time: he really is courting me. But I handle him the way I handle Rayver and any other guy who shows his intentions. I really want to get to know a person better before I jump into anything.

Now that you’re 18, what do you look forward to?

A lot! (Laughs) There are too many to mention but I really want to live life to the fullest!

Do you have any fears about turning older?

I guess only the fear that there are more expectations of you as you get older. Especially here in showbiz, a lot of people trust you and at the same time put pressure on you.

So now that you’re 18, is there any chance you’ll show more skin to your male fans, like, say, pose in a men’s magazine?

No, I don’t think so. Even though I’m 18, I’ll still ask for my parents’ approval. They are very important to me and I don’t think they’d agree. I have nothing against the women who have done it. Some of them are in fact my friends and I admire their photos because they’re very artfully done and all. I just don’t think I have the guts to do so.

After the heavy chopsuey-and-fried chicken lunch (and trying to remember how much things cost 20 years ago), we set off to walk through Chinatown.
