THE
manager of former world flyweight champion Vic
Darchinyan has publicly requested Golden Boy Promotions
(GBP) to promote a title eliminator against Filipino
Z Gorres in December.
Elias
Nasser announced in a radio program in Sydney that they
are hoping GBP will stage the bout between Darchinyan
and Gorres beneath the December 8 megabout of
pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. against
British superstar Ricky Hatton at the MGM Grand Garden
Arena in Las Vegas.
Recently,
the International Boxing Federation (IBF) has ordered
the camps of Darchinyan and Gorres, both explosive
southpaws, to negotiate a title eliminator fight by
November 8.
The
winner of the Gorres-Darchinyan fight will be declared
the mandatory title challenger to reigning IBF
super-flyweight champion Dimitri Kirilov.
Last
week, Gorres’s manager Tony Aldeguer admitted that talks
are ongoing for the title eliminator, although no final
deal has been reached.
“At this
stage, we are simply under negotiation with IBF and to
this day nothing has been confirmed yet on the venue,
the date and the fight money,” said Aldeguer in an
e-mail to BusinessMirror.
Darchinyan, meanwhile, has been releasing statements to
the Australian press as if the bout is pushing through.
“Gorres
will be one of the toughest fights of my career. He is a
very good fighter,” said Darchinyan “He lost a world
title fight to Fernando Montiel and should have gotten
the decision.”
Darchinyan was referring to Gorres’s controversial loss
to World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-flyweight
champion Fernando Montiel held in February in Cebu City.
Gorres,
25, bounced back from that defeat with a clinical
eighth-round technical knockout win over former world
champion Eric Ortiz of Mexico last August 11 at the Arco
Arena in Sacramento, California.
The
Australia-based Armenian Darchinyan on the other hand is
coming off a 12th round TKO victory over Filipino
Federico Catubay last week in Australia. It was the
31-year-old Darchinyan’s first outing since losing his
IBF flyweight crown via 5th round TKO to another
Filipino Nonito Donaire, Jr. last July in Connecticut.
Gorres
has a record of 27-2-1 with 15 knockouts while
Darchinyan’s tally is 29-1 with 23 KO’s. |
