DUMAGUETE finally won and Cebu lost to a less-illustrious foe as upsets marred yesterday’s Baseball Philippines Series Two tournament at the Rizal Memorial Ballpark.

The Dumaguete Unibikers beat defending champion Makati Mariners, 6-5, while the Manila Sharks gave the Cebu Dolphins their first loss in four games, 4-2.

National athlete Edmer del Soccoro’s home run right in the first inning and Dumaguete’s three-run splurge in the second inning propelled the Unibikers to their first win after four games.

Nahihiya na rin sila na wala pa kaming panalo,” said Dumaguete manager Lito Pulgo. Dumaguete had earlier lost to Cebu (16-1), Taguig (6-5) and Marikina (6-3).

The Sharks went to work early with three runs in the first inning to send the Mariners to their second straight defeat after winning their first two.

Del Socorro blasted the two-out first-inning homer off Jon Jon Robles’s second pitch across the left field fence to tough off the Dumaguete onslaught.

In the next inning, Meljon Aranzanso’s triple pushed Kelly Culubong home before Aranzanso scored Dumaguete’s third run on a wild pitch.

Starting pitcher Darwin de la Calzada, who earlier singled, scored after Denver Largo reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Iking Jimenez for a 4-0 Unibikers lead.

Sabik na rin talaga silang manalo. Mataas ang kumpiyansa nila,” Pulgo added.

Robles struck out 12 and yielded nine hits for eight innings atop the mound.

Makati actually threatened with two runs in the ninth. A one-out run batted in (RBI) double by Mark Castillo and an RBI single by Korean Chun Wang Song made it a one-run game, but de la Calzada forced two flyouts to end the match.

Manila’s Christian Galedo’s double off Cebu’s Korean pitcher Ha Sueng Jun sent lead off hitter Joey Guerrero, who earlier singled, home. A two-out RBI single by Rommel Roja pushed Galedo home with Roja scoring on the next at-bat with another Shark single by Marvin Malig for a 3-0 lead.
