Frankie Miñoza came back from a brief vacation
in the Japan Golf Tour with a playoff win over Dong-Hwan
Lee of Japan in the ABC Championships 2007 at the ABC
Golf Club yesterday.
Miñoza
shot three birdies as against a lone bogey to finish
with a two-under-par 70 for 274. He had to go through a
playoff though with Lee, who shot a sizzling 66 on the
final day.
Miñoza,
still the
Philippines
top player at 47, showed the poise that won him the RP
Open earlier this year to beat Lee in the playoff. He
pocketed ¥24 million, or an estimated P9.6 million. Lee
settled for the ¥12 million runner-up prize.
Shingo
Katayama was third with a 70 for 275. He earned
¥8.1million.
Becierra
tops in
Hong Kong
Dante
Becierra carded a five-under-par 67 for a 278 total at
the Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club in Hong Kong to
win the overall crown of the Masters Golf Fashion Hong
Kong Open Amateur and Mid Amateur Open Golf
Championships.
Becierra
finished three strokes ahead of Edward Richardson of
England who turned in a 71 for 281.
“Ang
sarap palang manalo, lalo na sa abroad pa. Sa
wakas, nagbunga din lahat ng pagod ko,” said a
jubilant Becierra in a phone interview Sunday.
Brothers
Chan-shih Chang and Chan-shih Chi of Taiwan finished
third and fourth with 274 and 275, respectively.
Filipino Jerson Balasabas scored a 71 for 296 for joint
fifth with Chitratanatham Chacrit of Thailand.
Juvic
running fifth
Juvic
Pagunsan followed up his first-round 66 with a
five-under 67 at the resumption of the rain-delayed
second-round to stay in the hunt at the Pertamina
Indonesia President Invitational in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Pagunsan
tallied 133 after 36 holes. He and Digvijay Singh of
India were one shot behind leaders Neven Basic of
Australia , Anthony Kang of the US and Lu-wei Chih of
Taiwan.
Jerome
Delariarte 69-140 and Gerald Rosales 70-142 were the
only other Filipinos who made the cut. Mars Pucay
(74-146), Antonio Lascuña (72-147) and Marlon Dizon
(76-150) missed the cut.
Bayron
ends up third
Rufino
Bayron birdied two of the last four holes to card a
two-under 69 and settle for solo third in the recent
Singapore Open Amateur Championship ruled by Aussie Tim
Stewart in runaway fashion at the Singapore Island
Country Club’s Bukit Course.
Although
Bayron (279) wound up six strokes behind Stewart’s
winning 273 and two off Thai Kiradech Aphibarnrat’s
second-place effort of 67-277, Bayron’s solid outing
firmed up his bid for one of the slots in the RP team to
next month’s Nomura Cup and the 24th Southeast Asian
Games in December.
Bayron
bogeyed No. 1 and had a roller coaster round of three
birdies against two more birdies in the next 13 holes.
But he knocked in a five-foot birdie putt on the 14th
then birdied the par-five 18th from six feet for a 35-34
card.
That
capped Bayron’s sterling performance in what was only
his second international stint where he completed a run
of under-par rounds that included a 71, 70 and 69 to
emerge the best Filipino performer with a five-under
279. |
