AN Abu Sayyaf bandit who was allegedly involved in the beheading of 10 Marines in Basilan more than three months ago has been arrested by police and soldiers.

Janatin Madjakin, alias Jing Amilul or Asalul Madjakan, was arrested last week in barangay Cabangalan, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, Chief Supt. Jaime Caringal, Western Mindanao police commander, said.

Caringal said Madjakin, who has pending warrants of arrest for kidnapping, serious illegal detention, frustrated murder and cattle rustling issued by a court in Isabela City, was captured by combined police and military intelligence agents.

The bandit is among those being hunted by policemen and soldiers for alleged involvement in the mutilation of Marines in barangay Guinanta, Al-Barka town, Basilan, following an ambush staged by a group of Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters.

Caringal said that aside from being a hard-core member of the Abu Sayyaf, Madjakin is also an active member of Urban Terrorist Group, which is based in Basilan.

He said that Madjakin operated under the umbrella of former Abu Sayyaf chieftain Khadaffy Janjalani, Amir Mingkong and Purudji Indama alias Abu Supek.

Janjalani was killed by troops earlier this year.

Caringal said the bandit has been positively identified by his previous kidnap victims, who said he was a member of the Abu Sayyaf.

Meanwhile, an aspirant for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and an incumbent Sangguniang Kabataan chairman were killed in separate incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday, reports reaching Camp Crame said.

Bonna Marie Cathedral, 21, SK chair of barangay Jayobo, Iloilo City, died of a single gunshot wound in the head at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Her killer was still unidentified.

In sitio Pasong Kasay, barangay San Vicente, Santa Maria, Bulacan, SK aspirant Martin Gumafelix was killed at around 1 a.m. Wednesday by a still- unidentified assailant.

The murder of Cathedral and Gumafelix brought to 11 the number of persons killed since September 28, the start of the filing of certificates of candidacies for SK and barangay positions.
