International Master Wesley So saw his unblemished run come to a screeching halt after losing in 79 moves to GM Ahmed Adly of Egypt in the seventh round of the World Juniors and Girls Chess Championships Tuesday at the T. Petrosian Chess House in Yerevan, Armenia.

Woman National Master Aices Salvador salvaged what could have been a bleak round for the Philippines as she downed Nune Darbinyan of the host country for her third straight victory in the girls’ division.

The defeat stripped So, 14, the leadership he held since the beginning of the tournament of the tough 80-man,13-round Swiss System tournament for woodpushers under 20 years old

By failing to improve his aggregate of 5.0 points, So, whose campaign is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), dropped into a tie for third to 11th places.

Adly, the No. 21 seed, assumed the top spot with 6.0 out of a possible 7.0 points. He is followed by No. 4 GM Viktor Laznicka of the Czech Republic, who trounced No. 28 Jayaram Ashwin of India to hike his total to 5.5.

So will face top seed GM Wang Hao of China in Round Eight. Wang, who was the cochampion in the recently concluded sixth Asian Individual Chess Championship in Cebu, drew with No. 25 IM Avetik Grigoryan of Armenia to raise his total to 5.0.

Besides So, Hao and Grigoryan, the other 5.0-pointers are No. 2 GM Daniel Stellwagen of the Netherlands, No. 3 GM Maxim Rodshtein of Israel, No. 9 GM Georg Meier of Germany, No. 11 Ivan Popov of Russia, No. 16 IM G. N. Gopal and No. 18 Parimarjan Negi of India.

Salvador’s triumph, her fourth against three setbacks, pushed the 17-year-old collegiate standout up to 4.0 points, catapulting her into a tie for 15th to 26th places.

Salvador is two-and-a-half points behind WIM Vera Nebolsina of Russia, who continues to stay alone at pole despite a truce with IM Dronavilli Harika of India, snapping her six-game winning streak.

Salvador, the 49th seed, next faces No. 15 WIM Swaminathan Soumya of India.
