THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will jump-start its Sports for Peace program with the staging of the Mindanao Children’s Games (MCG) next month in various provinces in Mindanao.

According to Joseph Encabo, senior executive assistant to PSC chairman William Ramirez, the multisports event for children aged 12 and below will be launched on November 14 in Davao City.

“The MCG aims to gather Christian, Muslim and Lumad children in one activity that knows no barrier or cultural and religious boundaries,” said Encabo.

“The PSC, led by our chairman, hopes that this event would help promote peace and harmony in Mindanao,” he added.

“It has been chairman Ramirez’s dream that people of different cultures and beliefs work together. And we believe this dream is shared by most Mindanaoans.”

After Davao, the PSC plans to bring MCG to Lanao and Cotabato.

Patterned after the World Children’s Games, the first MCG has programmed competitions in athletics, basketball, baseball, chess, football, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.

Besides the competition, athletes will also be taught the value of teamwork, fair play, respect and discipline.

The MCG will be held in cooperation with the Department of Education, Davao Association of Colleges and Schools and the Archdiocesan Center for Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue.
