    Boys-next-door? THINK AGAIN

    LOOKS can be deceiving.

These two young male stars have positioned themselves in the showbiz landscape as wholesome. They say they’re the boys-next-door type, naďve and innocent of any worldly pleasures. You would readily believe them because they have the looks to match: boyish features and winsome smiles that make girls swoon for them.

What the nameless-faceless don’t know is that these two boys are naughty and notorious. Notorious for frequenting this seedy spa where the so-called masseuse work their clients in areas that shouldn’t be worked on. They give extra service for some extra cash, and these boys are regular customers, frequenting the place at least once a week.

Who are these boys? Well, you might have become starstruck with one, while the other one is.... Well, never mind. His character actor dad might kill me if I reveal any more clues.

HOW do you connect five different entertainment personalities who are totally different from one another, yet feel bonded together? Television!

“Television is a great connector. I might not be able to travel to different places, but television reaches even the remotest part of the country. As actors who work on TV, we feel a connection between the audience and us. Kasama nila kami araw-araw habang nasa harap sila ng TV,” explains Amy Perez, the armchair business guru who frontlines the show Kabuhayan Swak na Swak. She is also in the movie I’ve Fallen for You with Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson. Amy is a television veteran. She has graced numerous TV shows and hosts her own radio show over dzMM.

Nakikita ko na masaya ang tao when they see actors they idolize. In Wowowee, it is like I am performing onstage where I get an immediate audience reaction. I can see with my eyes how happy they are when they’re able to touch or say hello to their favorite stars,” says Mariel Rodriguez.

Mariel charmed audiences with her Pinoy Big Brother Update on ABS-CBN. She was a neophyte then and despite her initial jitters, people just loved her. She became “maling-mali na Mariel.” “What you see is what you get. Kung ano ako sa TV, ’yon din ako sa personal,” says Mariel who is now a household name. Aside from Wowowee, she also hosts Entertainment Live and will be seen in the upcoming PBB Celebrity Edition Season 2. “I will not be here without television. I am happy ABS-CBN gave me the break. I am grateful to the people who tirelessly support us.” Mariel is also a special guest in Kung Fu Kids, a new teleserye on ABS CBN.

Former “boarder ni kuya” Bianca Gonzalez, who has been chosen as key opinion leader of Yahoo! Philippines for entertainment, gives television big credit for her continued popularity. She was doing commercial modeling when television beckoned. “I try to be as genuine as I am on TV. Para sa akin walang front kasi mahahalata ka,” she explains. Bianca is certainly one of the most photogenic faces on the medium. She started on YSpeak on Studio 23. Now, she has PBB and Entertainment Live. “I also do corporate hosting assignments. Television has given me a lot. I am able to express my ideas as an artist with TV,” she adds.

Perennial balikbayan Drew Arellano made heads turn with the Sunsilk “pare” advertising campaign. He tours around the country with the show Balikbayan on Q 11, helps contestants fulfill their dreams on Ride to Fame and greets everyone “good morning” in Unang Hirit, both shows on GMA. “I’ve been able to go to places I’d never been before because of Balikbayan. I share coffee with them every morning when I do Unang Hirit. I love TV. It is not just an empty box with images, it is our connection to the world,” Drew says.

Drew partners with Dominic Ochoa in the business venture Pampalabok. Dominic has shown his versatility as a performer, playing a contravida in Bituing Walang Ningning, a dancer in U Can Dance and a supporting character to Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo in the upcoming Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo under Star Cinema.

SOMEHOW, I find it incredulous and distressing that espadrilles are not made in abundance in our country. With jute as its dominant feature and material, a fiber indigenous to the archipelago, this type of footwear can only be a potential bestseller and astute business proposition.
