    Step Into Her Parlor

    By C. Mendez Legaspi

LIKE all dynamic individuals, Cielo Petines has a clear understanding of what motivates her. “I felt a need for a salon in the country. I’m a staunch salon client since I was five or six years old, and I go to salons three or four times a week. Even when I’m abroad, I do the same thing,” she says. Opening a salon bearing her name was a natural move as dabbing rouge on her well-pursed lips.

“There is a lack of personal service here. Going to the salon is a necessity for some and a luxury for others. Here at my salon, it is at your own pace. We even provide clients with extra services free of charge,” enthuses the University of the Philippines-Diliman BS Economics graduate and 20-year sales and marketing expert.

Cielo is the only salon at The Columns, that imposing Ayala Land three-tower property at the corner of Ayala  and Sen. Gil Puyat avenues. “The Ayalas offered me the space and I am first on the waiting list at Greenbelt 5. But I will build this property first before considering another area remotely closer to this,” Petines says.

Cielo the salon offers hair services such as haircut, perm, rebonding, relaxing, coloring services, cellophane, highlights, hair and scalp treatment, threading, waxing, nail services, makeup, facials, spot massages and eyelash extensions. Bridal packages are also available. Out-of-salon services are charged twice the rate. It is the only salon with WiFi access.

Petines studied at the Center for Aesthetic Studies, an affiliate of the swank Franck Provost salon. After graduating with a degree in cosmetology, she taught at the school and trained at the salon as well as at Fabio Salsa. She eventually became the in-house makeup artist for the high-end Makeup Forever brand. Next year, she will do further studies abroad in haircutting and coloring The Cielo staff is just as qualified as the owner, whose mission is to bring glamour back, or maybe just a hint of it. Benedi Pabillore and Rolli Paraan are US-licensed stylists. John Imperio cut his chops working at an elite salon for an exclusive neighborhood, while Gay Santos is a batchmate of Petines at CAS. The products that they use are also as exceptional. For hair, the salon uses Kerastase and Revlon. For makeup, they prefer Makeup Forever, Shu Uemura and MAC. “But I have no problems with clients bringing in their own products for their own use,” the perky Petines assures.

She admits that foreigners comprise her barkada, so they have also become the salon’s first loyal patrons. “I learn a little bit of something from each one of them,” she shares, adding that their influence has greatly aided in her growth as a businesswoman and artist. In fact, she has just acquired an artwork from an expat Italian painter and commissioned another friend, Per Andre Hoffman, to photograph real people that Petines and her staff made over. These large photos will be mounted as posters to adorn the windows of the salon.

In a country proud of its beauty, natural and scientific, and with beauty shops littering the landscape at every nook and cranny, Petines is confident that Cielo will elevate the standards. “To begin with, all the stylists are very experienced. They have the knowledge and the creativity. They know the science of their art. If anyone has a problem with hair and scalp, they can address it readily and not just push any product.”

Cielo is located at the ground floor of Tower 1 of The Columns, 6821 Ayala Avenue corner Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue, Makati City.
