University of the Philippines (UP) won its third women’s crown while Ateneo captured the men’s title in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 71 judo tournament at the UP-College of Human Kinetics Gym over the weekend.

The Lady Maroons dominated the women’s tournament by scoring 75 points. University of Santo Tomas finished second with 21, while De La Salle was third with 14.

Melissa Buyco led the Lady Maroons by taking the gold medal in the +78 kg. (heavyweight) division—one of the five won by State U out of the seven staked.

Also taking gold where Rookie Most Valuable Player Ada Estanislao (-52 kg or half-lightweight), Leslyn Gonzales (-70 kg or middleweight), Adriene Bernandez (-78 kg or half-heavyweight) and Catherine Lariosa (-57 kg or lightweight).

Sylvia Sueno (-78 kg/half-heavyweight), Isah Bitanga (+78 kg/heavyweight), Mylene Gonzales (-63 kg/half-middleweight), Francesca Guevarra (-48 kg/extra lightweight), and Kristine Sayaco (-52 kg/half-lightweight) clinched silver medals.

“We prepared for one year and most of my players performed really well all year,” said UP coach Reylin San Juan.

The Blue Eagles scooped 37 points, a close five points ahead of De La Salle with 32 points, and UP with 28 points, for their first title in four years.

MVP Paulo Luz took the gold medal in the -66 kg (half-lightweight) division, the only gold medal Ateneo won. But the Blue Eagles still emerged champion with a silver and six bronze medals to their collection.

The Green Archers had three gold medals courtesy of Jason Senales (-100 kg), Gerard Teruel (-60 kg) and Christian San Pedro (-73 kg) but only settled for one bronze medal.

A gold medal is equivalent to 10 points, a silver five points and a bronze two points.

Ateneo also took the title in the demonstration juniors division.
