University of the Philippines (UP) won its third women’s
crown while Ateneo captured the men’s title in the
University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)
Season 71 judo tournament at the UP-College of Human
Kinetics Gym over the weekend.
The Lady
Maroons dominated the women’s tournament by scoring 75
points. University of Santo Tomas finished second with
21, while De La Salle was third with 14.
Melissa
Buyco led the Lady Maroons by taking the gold medal in
the +78 kg. (heavyweight) division—one of the five won
by State U out of the seven staked.
Also
taking gold where Rookie Most Valuable Player Ada
Estanislao (-52 kg or half-lightweight), Leslyn Gonzales
(-70 kg or middleweight), Adriene Bernandez (-78 kg or
half-heavyweight) and Catherine Lariosa (-57 kg or
lightweight).
Sylvia
Sueno (-78 kg/half-heavyweight), Isah Bitanga (+78
kg/heavyweight), Mylene Gonzales (-63
kg/half-middleweight), Francesca Guevarra (-48 kg/extra
lightweight), and Kristine Sayaco (-52
kg/half-lightweight) clinched silver medals.
“We
prepared for one year and most of my players performed
really well all year,” said UP coach Reylin San Juan.
The Blue
Eagles scooped 37 points, a close five points ahead of
De La Salle with 32 points, and UP with 28 points, for
their first title in four years.
MVP
Paulo Luz took the gold medal in the -66 kg
(half-lightweight) division, the only gold medal Ateneo
won. But the Blue Eagles still emerged champion with a
silver and six bronze medals to their collection.
The
Green Archers had three gold medals courtesy of Jason
Senales (-100 kg), Gerard Teruel (-60 kg) and Christian
San Pedro (-73 kg) but only settled for one bronze
medal.
A gold
medal is equivalent to 10 points, a silver five points
and a bronze two points.
Ateneo
also took the title in the demonstration juniors
division. |
