  • Ateneo head apologizes for
    ‘wood’ in Blue Eagles bonfire

    By Reuben Terrado
    Reporter

ATENEO president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, SJ, has apologized to the De La Salle community for actions made by some Ateneo alumni and students during the school’s bonfire on Tuesday night.

The bonfire was held to celebrate the Blue Eagles’ victory in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 71 men’s basketball tournament against the Green Archers.

Photos spread in the Internet showed that some wood used for the bonfire had names of De La Salle players printed on them.

“I would like to extend my deepest apology to you and to the La Sallian community for what some alumni or students did at the Ateneo bonfire, namely, write the names of the La Salle players on [the] wood,” said Nebres in a letter addressed to De La Salle University system president Br. Armin Luistro.

Nebres said the rain on Tuesday afternoon prevented school officials from inspecting the wood used for the celebration.

“Unfortunately, none of us saw [it] ahead of time because the wood pile was covered by a tarp against the rain until the time came to light [it],” Nebres added in the letter.

Nebres said what happened was uncalled for.

“Despite our rivalries in sports, we are both committed to Christian values and what was done is certainly a violation of values we share,” said Nebres.

Nebres also said they will go after the culprit.

“Once again, my deepest apologies to you and to the La Sallian community. We are trying to find out who is responsible for the act,” Nebres said.
