THE
hosting of the Seventh Asian Youth Girls Volleyball
Championship will cost P6 million, according to
Philippine Volleyball Federation secretary-general Otie
Camangian.
Camangian said the amount could be raised just in time
for the October 11 to 18 event to be held at the
PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
“We are
happy that there are individuals who expressed their
desire to help us financially in hosting the event,”
said Camangian in the Philippine Sportswriters
Association Forum at the Shakey’s United Nations Avenue.
Camangian said former representative Prospero Pichay and
Sen. Francis Pangilinan have committed financial help
for the endeavor.
Pichay
was recently named chairman of the executive committee,
while Pangilinan was appointed honorary chairman.
The
Philippines is bracketed in Group A with Australia and
Sri Lanka. Group B is composed of defending champion
Japan, India and Indonesia. Group C includes South
Korea, Iran and Thailand. Group D has China, Chinese
Taipei and Kazakhstan.
The
tournament is a qualifier for the 2009 World Youth
Volleyball Championship.
The
team, mentored by Francis Vicente, has been preparing
for months now. It joined the National Open to prepare
for the Asian event.
“In the
last Asian Youth championship, we only formed a team
weeks before the tournament. We learned our lesson, that
is why we prepared months for this tournament,” said
Camangian. |
