AT A GLANCE

THE BRIBE

Jose “Joey” de Venecia III, cofounder of Amsterdam Holdings Inc. (AHI), claimed Elections Commissioner Benjamin Abalos tried to bribe him with $10 million to drop his proposal for the national broadband network (NBN) project and give way for Zhong Xing Telecommunication Equipment (ZTE) Corp. when they met in Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong on December 27, 2006.

THE PHONE CALL

In a notarized affidavit, De Venecia claimed that after negotiating with ZTE officials, a mad Abalos called him, shouting profanities and admitting that he had de Venecia wiretapped.

MEETING WITH DAD

On March 2007, De Venecia went to his father, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., and had a chance to discuss the NBN project with Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza, who allegedly told him that Abalos wants the project himself.

THE MYSTERY MAN

De Venecia revealed the President’s  husband  Miguel “Mike” Arroyo as the mystery man in the NBN deal. During a reconciliatory meeting in Wack-Wack sometime in March, De Venecia said Arroyo pointed a finger at him and told him to back off from the project.

Abalos, Mendoza; Jimmy Paz, Abalos’s chief of staff; Quirino ce la Torre, Abalos’s security staff and former police official; Ruben Reyes and Leo San Miguel also attended the meeting, De Venecia said.  (BM Research)
