    FAR Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Educational Foundational (FEU-FERN) erased De La Salle-Zobel’s bid to repeat as champion with a 58-56 victory Wednesday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 71 juniors’ basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

    The Baby Tamaraws slammed the door on the Junior Archers, who owned a twice-to-beat advantage in the semifinals. The Baby Tamaraws won their initial encounter, 72-70, in double overtime.

    They will now face Ateneo in a best-of-three series for the title that will start 3 p.m. on Saturday also at The Arena.

    “We came into this series as the underdog and we know we have to do our best,” said FEU-FERN coach Horacio Lim, who took over the team this season. “And doing our best is to play team defense.”

    Chris Tolomia, brother of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Chester Tolomia of San Miguel Beer, made the crucial baskets in the fourth to finish with 13 points, including seven in the final quarter.

    Russel Escoto also scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Chino Almario had 10 points, including four in the fourth quarter. Almario and Tolomia were the only scorers for the Baby Tamaraws in the fourth.

    UP vs FEU in women’s hoops finals

    UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) and FEU arranged a finals duel in women’s basketball action.

    The Lady Maroons defeated University of Santo Tomas (UST), 50-46, while the Lady Tamaraws beat Adamson, 74-63, in the knockout semifinal game Wednesday also at The Arena.

    UP is returning to the finals after placing second to Ateneo last season. The Lady Maroons reached the finals after overcoming the twice-to-beat advantage of the Tigresses.  The Lady Maroons and Lady Tamaraws clash for the title in a best-of-three affair starting 1 p.m. Saturday at The Arena.

    UST leads taekwondo action

    UST led the Season 71 taekwondo tournament Wednesday at the FEU Gym.

    Featherweight Christian de la Cruz, lightweight Ernest Mendoza and welterweight Samuel Morrison led the Growling Tigers in beating their first three opponents in the men’s division.

    The Growling Tigers beat Ateneo, 5-2, University of the East (UE), 6-1, and UP, 6-1, for a 3-0 win-loss card.

    Ateneo and FEU share second place with 3-1, while UE is in fourth with 1-2. UE and De La Salle are winless in three games.

    In the women’s side, the Tigresses are holding a 4-0 win-loss slate after defeating Ateneo, 7-0, De La Salle, 6-1, FEU, 6-1, and UE, 7-0.

    Finweight Nicole Amarillo, flyweight Caryn Pilongo, featherweight Aphrodite Brillantes, lightweight Emron Golding, welterweight Kathleen Valenzuela and middle/heavyweight Camille Manalo will try to make it six titles in a row for the Tigresses.

    FEU is in second in the women’s division with 3-1 followed by UE with 2-1. Ateneo is next with 1-2 while De La Salle and UE are winless in two games.

    In the juniors side, UST, which is aiming for its seventh straight title, holds a 2-0 mark after beating De La Salle-Zobel, 4-1, and FEU, 4-1.
