Defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU) blanked
Ateneo, 4-0, to regain the top spot after 10 rounds of
the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)
Season 70 men’s chess tournament Sunday at the
University of the East (UE) Briefing Room in
Manila.
The
Tamaraws, who settled for a 2-2 draw with La Salle in
Round 9 Saturday, now has an aggregate of 22.5 points,
just half-point ahead of the second-running Red Warriors
with two other teams not far behind going into the last
four rounds.
UE beat
University of Santo Tomas (UST), 2.5-1.5, in the ninth
round and then scored a similar victory over University
of the Philippines (UP) in the 10th.
Before
the defeat, the Maroons downed National University (NU),
3-1, to pad their total to a third-best 20.5,
half-a-point over De La Salle, which also drew with NU,
2-2, in Round 10.
The
Bulldogs are at fifth spot with 16.5 points, followed by
UST with 15.0. Ateneo is at the bottom of the field with
only 3.5 points.
It was
also a tight race in the women’s side with the top four
teams being separated by only four points.
UP
demolished UE, 4-0, and then trounced FEU, 3-1, to take
the driver’s seat with 24 points, one ahead of
La Salle and defending titlist UST.
The Lady
Archers edged the Tigresses, 2.5-1.5, in Round 9, and
followed it up with a 3.5-0.5 trashing of archrival
Ateneo Lady Eagles in the 10th. UST bounced back from
the setback by nipping NU, 3-1.
FEU
whacked Ateneo, 3.5-0.5, in the weekend’s only other
game to increase its haul to 20 points, way ahead of the
fifth-running UE, which has 12.5. NU is at No. 6 with
10.0 points followed by the cellar-dwelling Ateneo with
7.5.
It was a
different scenario in the juniors’ division where Ateneo
is dominating the field.
The
Eaglets blanked La Salle-Zobel, 4-0, and then manhandled
Adamson, 3-1, to raise their league-leading aggregate to
29.0, five more than defending champion UE’s and
Adamson’s identical 24.0 total.
UE beat
UST, 3-1, and NU, 3.5-0.5. Prior to bowing to UE, NU
scored a 3.5-0.5 victory over FEU, which rebounded by
blasting La Salle-Zobel.
Standing
after 10 rounds: (men’s) FEU 22.5, UE 22.0, UP 20.5, La
Salle 20.0, NU 16.5, UST 15.0, Ateneo 3.5; (women’s) UP
24.0, UST 23.0,
La Salle 23.0, FEU 20, UE 12.5, NU 10.0, Ateneo 7.5; (juniors’)
Ateneo 29.0, UE 24.0, Adamson 24.0, NU 16.0, UST 14.5,
FEU 12.5, La Salle-Zobel 0.

Nobody will be sacked before 15th

THE
University of the Philippines (UP) hires its coaches
only on a year-to-year basis without long-term
contracts.
The
College of Human Kinetics (CHK), which oversees UP
athletes’ activities, also said coaches and varsity
players alike are evaluated periodically to determine
whether their tenure on the team is extended or
terminated.
In this
process, even the recommendations of the dean of the CHK
and the UP chancellor are required as stamps of approval
to the evaluation process.

FOCUS is clearly paramount
in “the game of the kings”, as the UAAP chess tournament
nears its homestretch.

The CHK
cited the conditions after allegations have surfaced
that Joe Lipa will be removed as head coach of UP’s
men’s basketball team before the current season of the
University Athletic Association of the Philippines ends.
Lipa
invited the media to his team’s locker room after UP
lost to University of the East on Saturday. There, Lipa,
the only coach to give the Maroons a UAAP title in 1986,
voiced his displeasure over what he said was “a move to
replace [me] before the season ends.”
Team
insiders alleged that an announcement of the new coach
will be made on September 17, or two days after the
Maroons play their last game of the season against
Adamson on September 15. UP currently sports a 0-13
record, losing games by an average of 19.5 points and as
many as 40.
Professor Edwin Barber, the UP athletic director, said
the CHK evaluates the team and the program only after
the season ends and it would take “at least a week” to
say whether the school will let go of Lipa or not.
“We
don’t have a specific date yet,” Barber said. “Until the
15th no one will be replaced, until the end of the
season.”
“We run
into each other,” Barber answered when asked if he had
spoken to Lipa recently. “But I can’t recall when we
last had a talk.”

AdMU-Adamson, UP-UST in semis

ADAMSON
hacked out a 57-50 upset of University of the
Philippines (UP) to clinch the last Final-Four slot at
the close of the two-round eliminations of the
University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP)
Season 70 women’s basketball tournament yesterday at the
Far Eastern University (FEU) Gym.
Anna
Buendia scored 14 points and had five rebounds to lead
the Lady Falcons, who romped off to a strong start and
then held off the Lady Maroons’ sporadic rallies down
the stretch to join Ateneo, their victim and defending
champion University of Santo Tomas in the next round.
Katherine Sandel added 13 markers for the San Marcelino-based
dribblers, who need to beat the top-seeded Lady Eagles
twice to return to the finals after a year of absence
for a shot at regaining the title they held in 2003 and
2004.
The Lady
Maroons lost their second straight game and finished the
double-round preliminaries with a 12-2 record.
In other
games, FEU demolished University of the East (UE),
72-49, while UST squeaked past Ateneo, 54-52.
The Lady
Tamaraws’ seventh victory against the same number of
losses, however, proved meaningless as the Lady Falcons’
triumph doused their chance of making it to the
Final-Four for the third consecutive year. The Season 69
runner-up came into the match needing to win and hope
that Adamson would lose to UP to force a playoff for the
last semifinals berth.
Nikki
Leonardo drilled in 20 points, while last year’s
Mythical Five member Marichu Bacaro had a double-double
of 13 points and 11 rebounds to show the way for the
Tigresses, who notched their 10th victory against four
defeats to finish at No. 3.
The
España-based squad needs to win twice against UP to push
their title-retention bid to the last dance.
Veteran
guard Kat Quimpo scored 10 points to pace the 2005
titlist Lady Eagles, who will be marching to their fifth
successive Final-Four stint.
