DAVAO CITY—Eight persons killed and 17 others were injured in two landslides that hit a remote village of Maco, Compostela Valley, over the weekend.

    Ten others were reported missing.

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said five residents were killed in the first landslide that happened late afternoon on Saturday in Masara Poblacion, Maco, while three more were killed in the second landslide at dawn on Sunday in the same area.

Reports said that the first landslide happened at about 4:45 p.m. following a downpour in the area.

Killed in the first landslide were Esteban Mahilit, 59; Maria Christine Labor, 4, and her sister Maria Teresa, 1, their mother, Rosemarie Labor, 28 and Harold Sanchez.

Injured were Pagay Pablo, 9; Eduardo Lazaro, 65; Estrella Magnanao, 52; Eugene Peraliz, 17; Ynaya Sotero, 37; Edwin Romeo, 36; Jeremie Aboul, 28; and an unidentified male patient. They were rushed to the Davao Regional Hospital in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

The second landslide happened nearby at about 3 a.m. Sunday. The OCD said the second incident killed three persons and injured nine others.

Ten persons, including the barangay captain, who earlier led a search- and-rescue operation for the victims of the first landslide, are still missing.

The OCD said more than 70 families were evacuated to the Masara Elementary School and the barangay hall.

The search-and-rescue operations are being done by the residents, Army troops, Apex Mining rescue group and the Compostela Valley Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) Response Team.

After the OCD and the Davao Regional Disaster Coordinating Council asked the Air Force to provide air transport, the 503rd Rescue Squadron sent helicopters early Sunday to ferry injured victims to the nearest hospital.

Medical and relief teams from PDCC were also sent to the area and an incident command system was established.

The OCD has already requested 100 sacks of rice from NDCC.
