things came out of the tragic yet redeeming event
commemorated today. The first was the correct valuation
of human life. The second was the possibility of
Christian living. And the third, the discovery that
people don’t need heroes; they need a reason to become
heroes themselves. President Marcos’s brazen murder of
Ninoy Aquino, intended to shock and awe the nation into
a deeper submission to his rule, on the contrary
underscored the necessity of its immediate termination.

didn’t even hear the shots. Someone had to tell us about the
gunshots outside, and then I saw Doña Aurora Aquino stand up
and start praying. Roberto Coloma of Agence France Presse,
meanwhile, quickly grabbed the nearest phone and began
breaking the news to the world. |
