The population of every country sincerely believes that it is wiser and better and more advanced in some way than its neighbors. For instance, there are at least four countries—the United States, France, Britain and Switzerland—whose people believe that it was they who invented democracy. And possibly the people of Greece would insist that the origins of the democratic ideal go back even further, to the time of Socrates and Plato.
