THE weather in Metro Manila is expected to be rainy, at least until Friday, due to Typhoon Karen that is threatening Northern Luzon, which is now about 450 kilometers east southeast of Tuguegarao City moving west at 22 kilometers per hour (kph).

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Typhoon Karen has intensified to maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

As of 2 a.m. on Tuesday, public storm warning Signal No. 3 was hoisted over Cagayan and Isabela, while public storm warning Signal No.  2 is up over Batanes, the Babuyan Group of Islands, Calayan Group of Islands, Apayao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Quirino, Northern Aurora and Nueva Vizcaya.

Public storm warning Signal No. 1 was raised over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, the rest of Aurora and Polilio Island.

Pagasa said the typhoon is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and bring rains over the entire country, especially the western sections.

Residents along coastal areas under storm warning Signal No. 2 and 3 are alerted against big waves and storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.

By tomorrow, the typhoon is expected to be in the vicinity of northern Cagayan or 50 kilometers east of Aparri.
