Pinays show girl power in Math olympiad

THREE Philippine high-school students participating in the gruelling 2007 China Mathematical Olympiad for Girls bagged three bronze medals, a feat made more remarkable by two things: first, they were the youngest participants; and second, the competition has been expanded this year with the addition of teams from the United States, Russia and Canada.

The Filipino bronze recipients are Stephanie Anne Oliveros, a senior from Philippine Science High School, Aileen Giselle Chua, a junior from Grace Christian High School, and Geraldine Baniqued, a sophomore from St. Paul College, Pasig. The fourth team member is Jillian Kristel Sy  from Chiang Kai Shek College. As always, the Pinay mathletes were trained for the competition by the Mathematics Trainers Guild (MTG), led by its president, Dr. Simon Chua.

The math Olympiad for girls began as a competition among the different Chinese regions, but started to include participants from other countries as the years went on.  The Philippines has been participating in this event since 2002, and has been consistently raking in medals every time.  However, this year’s competition was deemed the toughest yet, as for the first time, there were participants from non-Asian countries, including the United States.
