  • Huge ratings in China’s Olympic
    opening ceremonies

    HISTORIC high.

That was how television ratings were in China during the spectacular opening ceremonies on Friday evening.

Some 842 million Chinese, representing 68.8 percent of the country’s total television viewers, watched the live ceremonies, according to CSM Media Research, a leading market- research company in China.

The research further said that more than 90 percent viewed how legendary Chinese gymnast Li Ning lit the urn that highlighted what was perhaps the best opening ceremony in Olympic history. It probably even beat the 1992 Barcelona ceremony where an archer shot a flaming arrow to light the Olympic urn.

The Chinese people, the research added, showed unprecedented enthusiasm for the Olympics—70.7 percent of urban viewers and 68 percent of rural; 69.7 percent of men and 67.9 percent of women; 61 percent of the young population; 72.8 percent of the adults; and 71 percent of the elderly viewed the opening ceremonies.
