    Mattel: Sorry for lead in recalled toys

    AMERICAN toy maker Mattel Southeast Asia Pte. Ltd. has voluntarily recalled some products all branded “Fisher-Price” toys made by a contract manufacturer in China that were produced using a nonapproved paint pigment containing lead, in violation of applicable United States standards, as well as the company’s own standards.

    This was announced by Mattel Monday, adding it was making a “thorough investigation” in order to “address this issue quickly and as effectively as possible.”

    “We apologize to everyone affected by this recall, especially those who bought the toys in question,” said Robert A. Eckert, chairman and chief executive officer of Mattel Inc. “We realize that parents trust us with what is most precious to them—their children. And we also recognize that trust is earned. Our goal is to correct this problem, improve our systems, and maintain the trust of the families that have allowed us to be part of their lives by acting responsibly and quickly to address their concerns.”

    The company “requires our manufacturing partners to use paint from approved and certified suppliers” and the system to verify this, “but in this particular case our procedures were not followed,” said Jim Walter, Mattel Inc.’s senior vice president of Worldwide Quality Assurance. “We are investigating the cause to ensure such events do not reoccur.”

    If the company concludes that safety procedures were knowingly ignored, Mattel will take appropriate action, he added.

    The recall involves figures and toys manufactured between April 19 and July 6, 2007, and were sold alone or as part of sets from May 1 to August 2007. The toys have a date code between 109-7LF and 187-7LF marked on the product.

    The model names and product numbers for the recalled toys, which are all marked with “Fisher-Price,” include:

    §          39054 Sesame Street Shape Sorter;

    §          B6966 Barney Best Manners Phone;

    §          B8065 Dora Say It Two Ways Asst;

    §          G3825 Dora Talking Vamonos Van;

    §          G3830 Dora Let’s Go Adventure;

    §          J0342 Diego Animal Adventure
