JAY BAYRON broke into the top 100 amateur golfers in the world, placing a respectable 88th with an accumulated 775.00 points in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) System.

WAGR is the official ranking worldwide provided by R&A, the golf world’s rules and development body which operates with the consent of more than 125 national and international amateur and professional organizations from more than 110 countries. This big group has control over an estimated 28 million golfers in Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Americas (outside the USA and Mexico).

Under the WAGR system, R&A ranks amateurs around the world on the basis of their average performance in counting events on a rolling cycle over the previous 52 weeks.

Bayron received a remarkable 51 points (his highest since 2005) in the 91st Philippine Open at Wack Wack last February and won the low amateur honors.

He gained a pair of 33s at the Southwestern and Australian Amateurs plus 32 in the Malaysian Amateur and 31 in the Saujana Amateur Open.  The 28-year-old Davao native registered 29 in the Philippine Amateur, 24 in the Riversdale Cup and 18 in the North and South Amateur.

Anthony “Tonight” Fernando was deep into the rankings at 346th position with 564.48 ranking points.

Fernando, 24, a protégé of reigning national seniors’ champion Wigberto “Iggy” Clavecilla, has only played in six R&A-sanctioned events. He earned 25 points in each of the Spirit of America and Philippine Amateurs.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga graduate made 22 in Saujana Amateur Open, 21 in Malaysian Amateur, 19 in Greystone Invitational and nine in Australian Amateur.

The six-foot-two Mike Bibat, a 23-year-old veteran of international tournaments, was the third Filipino on the list with 439.22 rank points, good for 496th position.  His 28 and 22 in the Malaysian and Southwestern Amateurs were his best scores.

Further down the standings were Marvin Dumandan (315.62 for 645th), Antonio Asistio (196.88 for 829th) and Jun Bernis (184.38 for 858th).
