IT’S
final. Jennifer Rosales is not competing in the 2008
Ricoh Women’s British Open.
The
Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) announced
Tuesday the names of the qualifiers to the Open. They
are Moira Dunn, Paige Mackenzie and Katie Futcher of the
United States, Gloria Park of Korea, Katie Futcher and
Shanshan Feng of China.
“I’m
very sad and disappointed. I played one of my best
weeks in months but still it didn’t merit a positive
result,” Rosales said in a text message to Greenside
Chip.
Dunn,
Mackenzie, Park and Futcher earned their tickets to the
Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire, England, where the
Women’s British Open will be played, through the recent
Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic tournament.
Dunn, a
New Yorker, topped the qualifier. Her best finish in
the Ricoh British Open was a tie for 24th in 2003.
Mackenzie and Futcher meanwhile, will be playing their
first Open.
Feng got
her slot also through the Jamie Farr tournament, where
players who are not yet qualified for the Open gets to
play in England if they land in the first five—exclusive
of those who are already qualified—after the first 36
holes of play.
At the
end of the second round, Dunn, Rosales, Giulia Sergas,
Katherine Hull, Se Ri Pak and Brittany Lincicome were
bunched at ninth with five-under 137s.
Because
Hull, Pak and Lincicome were already seeded to the Open,
15th-placers Mackenzie, Park and Futcher automatically
got into contention. Therefore, the third-round scores
were needed to break the ties.
In the
penultimate round, Lincicome had a 67 for 204, Futcher a
67-205 and Dunn a 69-206. Rosales made a 69-206 which
was better than Mackenzie’s 68-208 and Park’s 70-209.
Still,
Rosales did not make it.
“Maybe
there was a different computation for it. I really
don’t know how it is done,” said the ICTSI-backed
Rosales, who placed a career-best 15th at Jamie Farr and
earned her biggest paycheck of P873,000.
A total
of 126 players will play in the Open, including world
No. 1 and defending champion Lorena Ochoa, Jamie Farr
winner Paula Creamer, multiple champ Karrie Webb and
Filipinas Dorothy Delasin and Frances Bondad, who now
represents Australia though.
A
total of $2 million will be at stake in the Open, which
tees off from July 31 to August 3. The winner will also
automatically qualify for the Samsung World Championship
from October 2 to 5, and the historic $1
million-to-the-winner ADT Championship set from November
20 to 23. |
