While other real-estate companies such as MegaWorld Corp. are increasingly going into joint ventures (read: somebody provides the land and the real-estate company develops the land), Ortigas & Co. Ltd. Partnership (OCLP) prefers to go it alone because of its huge land bank.

For one, OCLP  is one of the claimants of the MetroWalk sequestered property (read: this is adjoining OCLP-developed Tiendesitas) that the Presidential Commission on Good Government has leased out really cheap to the group of former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson.

And then, there’s the Camp Crame property, which currently hosts the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police (read: this is near OCLP’s Greenhills Commercial Center).

OFW 1: Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) offices nationwide are directly accepting applications for nurses to Saudi Arabia hospitals. The initial demand is for 5,000 nurses.

As everybody knows, the main job of the POEA is to accredit recruitment companies, not become one itself. Then again, perhaps POEA administrator Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz doesn’t believe the POEA-licensed recruiters can do the job right.

OFW 2: On paper, foreign caregivers in Spain earn €900 or about P56,000 a month. That’s gross revenue. After deducting taxes, apartment rent (yes, they don’t “stay in”), and food expenses, net income is more like between €200 and €300, which isn’t much to send home to.

Should it get its way, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) chaired by Feliciano Salonga will be expanding Freeport to include part of Bataan (in the direction of Ayala Land Inc.’s Anvaya Cove resort project)

You see, Korean and Chinese investors want part of the freeport’s action. SBMA’s problem is it doesn’t have enough land left to lease out outside of the forest, which is, of course, unthinkable.

Right now, SBMA’s biggest locator is Acer-branded producer, Wistromm and its satellite of suppliers, all of which are located in the Taiwan Industrial Park.

Did you know 1: Gross sales from selling siomai and other dimsum at PureGold-Tayuman is estimated at P6,000 a day. The supermarket chain is currently host to three dimsum franchises, although PureGold, as a matter of policy, allows only one dimsum venture per supermarket.

Did you know 2: Citibank NA wants to eventually tour local companies with its “Use Credit Wisely” program. The idea here is to teach people to be more financially savvy.

Right now, Citi has an interactive web page (read: it has useful worksheets for those who want to balance their household budgets) and a monograph on the subject.

Did you know 3: Because business has been so good, Sunlife Financials (Phils) is setting aside starting this year a percent of its net income to give back to the community. So far this year, the insurance company has funded a Gawad Kalinga project and there’s a lot of money left over for another corporate social responsibility or CSR before the end of 2007.
