FACIAL
recognition will be the next in thing for security,
according to a Singaporean company engaged in developing
the software.
The market is now ready to accept facial
recognition as a security measure in facilities such as
dormitories, power plants, buildings, airports and
offices, among others, XID Technologies Pte. Ltd. chief
executive officer Mike Holt said in an interview with
the BusinessMirror on Friday. The earlier versions of
facial recognition failed, he said, because these used
only few reference points in the face of the subject.
He said the big difference is XID’s
facial-synthesis model, wherein the face of a certain
individual is subjected to different conditions. “Our
technology factors in the lighting, angle and visuals,”
he said.
“For instance, if a person grows a
beard, we can still recognize him because our software
has the capability to detect it,” he added.
Under facial synthesis, Holt said XID
will implement a three-dimensional format and then
subject it do different looks to ensure that person
could still be recognized even he had some changes. With
three-dimensional imaging, Holt said users can
manipulate and morph a face into different looks.
Holt said XID’s facial-recognition
software does not center on the fea wture extraction per
se, but on the different vectors of a face. With this
concept, Holt said the users can easily detect the
changes in a certain face.
XID sees a great potential for its
product, since security is a major concern these days in
Southeast Asia, unlike before where many countries did
not appreciate the technology.
He said a facial -recognition
software-based monitoring facility is more efficient
than the finger-scanning system because this can last
longer than the latter.
“A finger-scanning system is subjected
to more exposure like dirty fingers, which can shorten
the life span of the machine. In facial recognition, you
just have to stand in front of the machine and there’s
no need to put a part of your body in the machine.”
