Lions expect a stroll against Altas

SAN BEDA goes for win No. 2 against University of Perpetual Help Dalta even while Letran faces St. Benilde in the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament today at The Arena in San Juan.

Still billed as the strongest team this season, San Beda opened with a rousing 91-69 rout of Jose Rizal U, on Saturday. The Heavy Bombers are picked as strong challengers to the Red Lions’ throne.

Frankie Lim, the ex-pro, said their rout of the Heavy Bombers shows they are on the right track and are bound to do the same against the Altas at 2 p.m.

“We changed a bit and we polished some weaknesses. I am positive though that my players will be more determined and aggressive just like in our game against Jose Rizal,” said Lim.

At 4 p.m., Letran and St. Benilde square off in a match between teams which also won their opening-day matches.

Lim is pinning his hopes on veterans Yousif Aljamal, Pong Escobal and Sam Ekwe, who was his usual Most Valuable Player self with the season’s first double-double of 14 points and 18 rebounds.

The Atlas, on other hand, need all the adjustments they could think off to offset the loss of six-foot-nine Indonesian Thoyib Isman, who was found ineligible to play by the NCAA board.

Perpetual dropped their opening game against San Sebastian College, 56-59, on Saturday.

St. Benilde also made its presence felt after clobbering Mapua, 74-68, Wednesday. The Blazers relied on returnees Paolo Orbeta and Christian Cabatu in notching their first win.

“I hope the win [over Mapua] will inspire my players to strive harder. Konting adjustments na lang naman ang kailangan namin that’s why I am hoping that my players will show the same performance we dished out in our first game,” said St. Benilde coach Caloy Garcia.

Standings: San Beda 1-0, Letran 1-0, St. Benilde 10, Jose Rizal 1-1, San Sebastian 1-1, Perpetual 0-1, Mapua 0-2.
