    Lightning hits Transco
    facility, triggers outages
    By Paul Anthony A. Isla
    Reporter

AS if in prelude to the rainy season, three transmission facilities of the National Transmission Corp. (Transco) tripped Tuesday noon after one of them got struck by lightning.

Transco, in a statement late Tuesday noon, said there was full restoration of power in affected areas following the multiple tripping of its 230-kilovolt lines in Luzon at 3:25 p.m. with the restoration of the San Jose-Balintawak line.

This was after the Hermosa-Mexico and Cabanatuan-Mexico lines were restored, along with the affected Meralco franchise area including parts of Makati, Manila, Quezon City, Malabon and Bulacan.

Transco said that linemen who patrolled the area had reported that the tripping was caused by a lightning strike at the San Jose-Balintawak line, which also affected four of National Power Corp. generation plants—the Ilijan Natural Gas Plant and Calaca Coal-fired Thermal Plant, both in Batangas; the Malaya Thermal Plant in Rizal, and the Limay Combined Cycle Power Plant in Bataan.

Malaya, Calaca and Limay are now back online while the Ilijan plant is expected to be on full capacity by Tuesday night.

Manila Electric Co. said that Meralco Sector 1 (serving the northern portion of Metro Manila and some areas in Bulacan) experienced power outage at 1:14 p.m. on Tuesday when a number of 230-kV lines of Transco tripped out. As of press time, the cause of the 230-kV line trippings is still being determined.

Affected parts in Metro Manila included Valenzuela, Malabon, Navotas, Balintawak, San Francisco del Monte, Kamuning, Caloocan, Novaliches, Diliman, Fairview, La Loma, North Port, Tondo, Binondo, Paco, Sampaloc, Sta. Ana, San Juan, Ermita and Malate.

Affected Bulacan parts were Meycauayan, Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas, Sta. Maria, Angat, San Jose and Sapang Palay.

“The Meralco System Control, in close coordination with Transco, is cautiously restoring power to the affected areas. Meralco crews were also immediately dispatched to major substations such as Balintawak, Duhat, Dolores and Novaliches,” said Meralco vice president and corporate communications chief Elpi Cuna.
