Atienza presses for setting up of
    ecology center in every barangay

ENVIRONMENT Secretary Lito Atienza is batting for the establishment of an ecology center in every barangay to boost the nationwide implementation of Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001.

The establishment of an ecology center in every barangay and the appointment of an ecology officer to manage the problem on waste will promote a healthier environment, Atienza said.

The DENR chief led recently the launch of “Zero Basura Olympics: Fast-track RA 9003” at the Rizal Provincial Capitol in Pasig City, wherein he enjoined all Filipinos to work for a “basura-free landscape” through a “zero-waste lifestyle.”

The zero-garbage marathon, the first of its kind in the country, aims to prioritize, operationalize, institutionalize and fast-track the LGU-wide implementation of the garbage law.

“In solid-waste management, the enemy is visible and odorous. If we put our minds and our hearts into it, we can conquer our garbage issues, manage them ecologically and move closer toward a zero-waste society,” Atienza said.

He added that “when we conquer our garbage, we are not only saving our country from the effects of global warming but we also ensure food security for ourselves.”

The DENR chief explained that one way of solving our garbage problem is going beyond segregation and learning about composting.  “When we go beyond segregation and practice composting, we are not only making our surroundings clean, we are also helping the government in solving the problems on food security,” he said.

He explained that “in composting, for example, we are producing organic fertilizer that is lower in cost and good for the environment.”
