LYCEUM’S defense proves helpless against a determined UST VI. --NONOY LACZA

UST, La Salle get V-League ‘3/4’ incentive

Santo Tomas U (UST) brought down Lyceum, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23, yesterday to gain a share of the lead and assure itself of a playoff for the second final berth in the Shakey’s V-League at The Arena in San Juan.

Drawing a solid game from former top Adamson hitter Suzanne Roces, the Tigresses stamped their class over the Lady Pirates in the first two sets then hung tough in the third to complete the victory in one hour and 20 minutes.

It was actually a repeat of its sweep over Lyceum in their elimination-round meeting on June 7, but the victory, the Pirates’ seventh against three losses, even gave Lyceum a shot at the first final berth as UST caught up with Lyceum and San Sebastian at the helm heading into the last semis playdate tomorrow.

By winning three games in the semis, UST is assured of a playoff for the other final seat under the league’s “three-of-four” incentive with the Tigresses, winners of the inaugural staging of this Shakey’s Pizza-sponsored event in 2004, shooting for the top spot against the La Salle Lady Archers tomorrow.

La Salle also notched its third straight win in the semis with a similar 3-0 rout of Ateneo in the other game, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15, and likewise gained a playoff for the second final berth.

Thai import Sanorseang Areerat and Jacqueline Alarca each had 11 points for La Salle, which hiked its record to 6-4 heading into its matchup with UST tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the UST-Lyceum duel will be telecast on NBN-4 today from 2 p.m., while the Ateneo-La Salle clash will be aired tomorrow. Games are also replayed over Viva Prime from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Mondays to Saturday.
