    Nearly a week after...

IT was Independence Day when Rudy “Daboy” Fernandez was finally laid to rest.

There were a bit of news that made us see the lighter side of that day.

From various reports on Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP), we’re amazed how some artistas also became inserted themselves into news—this even though Daboy’s well-known best friends (Jinggoy, Ipe and Bong) had the good sense to keep quiet after giving a few words on the death of their buddy.

There was dramatic actor Christopher de Leon on the lessons he learned from Daboy’s death. He narrated the closeness of his family and Daboy’s, mentioning how Lorna Tolentino would run to his wife, Sandy Andolong, whenever she and Daboy were having problems. He recounted the cruise the Ferndandez and de Leon families did in nearby Southeast Asia countries.

He also mentioned how he and Daboy played billiards and boxed in Daboy’s home gym. He also remembered the movies that they both starred in.

De Leon said that since Daboy’s hospitalization, he had become conscious of his health, which other artistas his age should also do, adding that he doesn’t eat pork anymore and goes for the “all natural” stuff. He now only drinks wine, unlike in his younger days when he could ingest any hard liquor and not worry about the consequences.

Known for being a devoted Born-Again Christian, he advised other artistas to also mind their spiritual health, not just the physical. He pointed out how the grueling cycles in show biz could ruin one’s spiritual and physical well-being. Being at peace with oneself, he said, means also being prepared for death. If he’s going to die, de Leon hoped for a quick one, not a slow, painful process like what cancer did to Daboy.

Everything seemed to be well-scripted until he mentioned in Tagalog, “Like what I said, each of us has our own time to meet our Maker. Take, for example, Nida Blanca. She was a vegetarian but she died due to stabbing. We can never tell. We must be prepared always.”

We all know that being a vegetarian could be key to a longer, healthier life. Then again, Linda Eastman-MaCartney was a vegetarian but she died of cancer. And so was Filipino musician Toti Fuentes, a self-confessed health buff who didn’t even drink coffee, but died of cancer.

All artistas and fans must learn from de Leon’s words of wisdom. We can never really tell. Vegetarians may live long, but they can still die due to stabbing. Brilliant idea.

    On a lighter note...

FOR the hundreds of thousands of fans who trooped to the wake and burial rites, many were wondering why Ralph and Renz, Daboy’s children with Lorna Tolentino, aren’t in show biz. Bloggers kept on mentioning how good-looking the two boys are and with their genes, they can give other scions of show biz couples a run for their money.

Like their older half-brother Mark Anthony, in show biz parlance, they have lots of paghuhugutan (wellspring of emotion), which are must-resources for those future award-winning roles.
