UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) did what Ateneo couldn’t—clinch an outright pass to the semifinal round at the conclusion yesterday of the Shakey’s V- League volleyball tournament elimination round.

UST ousted Far Eastern University (FEU), 25-10, 26-24, 25-19, while San Sebastian foiled Ateneo, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 33-31, at The Arena in San Juan.

UST notched its fourth victory in seven games to earn a spot in the carryover semifinal round of the event sponsored by Shakey’s and organized by Sports Vision Inc. Santo Tomas joins top-notchers Lyceum and San Sebastian in the semifinals.

Behind its top guns, University Athletic Association of the Philippines Most Valuable Player Mary Jane Balse and power hitting Venus Bernal, the Tigresses showed no mercy to the Rachel Ann Daquis-led Lady Tamaraws.

After dominating the first set with a 15-point margin, UST got a scare when it fell into a 1-8 hole. However, UST exploded with a 15-8 run to tie at16-16. The Tigresses then patiently surged ahead at 24-23 before slamming the Lady Tams, 26-24, in that decisive set.

The fifth loss in seven outings eliminated FEU in the tournament.

Ateneo, on the other hand, failed to get its act together against a tough San Sebastian crew, which clinched its fifth straight win.

Fortunately for the Lady Eagles, who tied Adamson and De La Salle with a 3-4 card, they won more sets than the two squads. The Lady Falcons and the Lady Archers will dispute the last semifinal spot tomorrow.

After dropping a closely tight first set, San Sebastian won the next three sets to win the match and tie Lyceum at the top with both carrying 6-1 slates.

The Lady Stags, behind Thai import Jaeonsri Bualeeand Laurence Ann Latigay hung through against a motivated Lady Eagles team. Bualee, Latigay and Sha-Sha Devanadera rallied San Sebastian to survive six set points in the fourth set and come up with the win.

Games are telacast over NBN-4 at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. across the week. It is replayed over on Viva Prime at 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. on weekdays.
