DESIGN
is such a vast field. Almost every built or manufactured
object in this world requires the genius touch of
someone with creativity and an acute aesthetic
sensibility. A recent trend in the Philippine design
scene is the integration of local materials into the
design of different objects to distinctly define its
origin, while making it global at the same time. This
is what exactly Aranaz, a posh bag retail store, is
doing.

THE diamond lines create a
pattern on one side that is embossed as wood framing,
acting as support for the cantilevered display shelves.
While
most designers are focused on aesthetics and art with
regard to their product, Aranaz also put in considerable
thought to the interiors of their new branch at
Greenbelt 5. I believe that designer products deserve
noting less than a backdrop that projects an image of a
high level of design commitment.
The
recurring theme in the interiors of Aranaz seems to be
based on the shape of a diamond, a shape that represents
class and luxury. This is particularly apt for the store
because their products also represent the same ideals.
The shape was plastered all over the store in different
sizes and locations, creating a web-like pattern on
surfaces to give the space excitement and vibrancy. On
one side, these lines recess from the actual wall
surface forming an interesting play of shadows. This was
also applied in the ceiling design, which achieves the
illusion that the walls wrap you even from above. There
are also some recessed diamond nooks that become display
shelves for the products. These recessed nooks are
randomly positioned in the wall that when seen as a
whole create a feeling of movement. On the other side,
the diamond lines are embossed as wood framing, acting
as support for the cantilevered display shelves. At the
store front, the diamond pattern becomes a lattice that
provides privacy between the mall proper and the
interior of the store. It also doubles as a storefront
display where new bag designs can be hung to attract the
passersby.

Retail
stores should be designed in this manner. The interiors
should always reflect the products that they house, and
should embody the image and principles behind the
product. The physical interpretation of a concept should
be implemented carefully and consistently to achieve a
consistent and complementary relationship between
product and interior.

AT the
end, there was a rousing applause. It was not a premiere; in

was ringing and it was coming from an audience visibly
impressed and, more than that, touched to the core. |
