    ADAMSON PULLS OFF ANOTHER SHOCKER

    FALCONS soar higher than eagles.

The Adamson Lady Falcons proved that statement when they pulled off another surprise win in the Shakey’s V-League, shocking the Ateneo Lady Eagles, 16-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-13, yesterday at the Arena in San Juan.

Adamson’s win also snapped Ateneo’s three-game winning run in the women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Falcons, who came from behind in winning their first game last Sunday against University of Santo Tomas (UST), repeated the formula against the Lady Eagles to take the much-needed win.

The Lady Eagles, who saw Thai import and playing assistant coach Kanchana Jindarat hurt her back in the fifth and final set, could not close out the Lady Falcons after winning the first two sets rather handily, allowing Adamson to clinch the thrilling match.

Guest player Suzanne Roces and mainstay Rissa Jane Laguilles provided the crucial points for the San Marcelino-based squad, while guest player Michelle Laborte paced the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Falcons pounced on Denise Acevedo’s costly error to go up, 14-13, in the deciding set before Roces fired away a kill that the Lady Eagles failed to return.

Adamson’s second straight upset win improved its record to 2-3 (win-loss), while Ateneo dropped to third with a 3-2 slate.

It was a sorry setback for the Lady Eagles, who had racked up three straight wins and were a set away from formalizing their entry into the semifinal round of the event backed by Mikasa, Accel and Jaemark’s Restaurant.

But the Lady Falcons had other things in mind.

With Rissa Laguilles and Hannah Suarez backing up Roces in offense, the Lady Falcons refused to crack up in the third and came away with crucial hits and superb court coverage to foil Ateneo’s bid for a sweep.

In the second game, three-time defending champion De La Salle regained its deadly form to defeat Letran, 25-22, 25-28, 23-25, 25-17, and end a two-game skid.

With the victory, La Salle leveled its record to 3-3 in the event sponsored by Shakey’s and organized by Sports Vision.

Guest players Amy Guanco and Thai import Eve Areerat led the scoring for the Lady Archers, while power-hitting guest player Michelle Carolino and Bangladesh Pantaleon led the Lady Knights.

Letran, which broke through with a win over Far Eastern University on Sunday, snatched the third set with their never-say-die attitude, but still fell to a 1-4 mark, tying idle FEU.

Games are telecast over NBN-4 across the week from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and replayed over Viva Prime from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

La Salle, which dominated the first two sets, sustained its deadly form in the fourth set, leading by as many as nine points (20-11). But Letran, behind the heroics of Carolino and Pantaleon, cut through the deficit and kept within distance of the Lady Archers.

Letran’s loss meant the Lady Knights would not make it to the semifinal round.

The tournament is a single elimination round and the top five finishers qualify in the semis.

Second-placer San Sebastian was still battling UST as of press time.
