    Port body completes projects
    By VG Cabuag
    Reporter

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has finished various small port improvement projects in Visayas and Mindanao during the February through April, according to its report for the period.

The port regulator said it completed its projects in facilities in Ozamiz, Caticlan, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Caramcam in Bislig City and Jagna in Bohol.

The Ozamiz  project includes extension of its wharf, land reclamation, and placing of mooring and fendering system, while the project in Caticlan involves the construction of a new pier, a ramp for the
Roll-on/Roll off vessels, reclamation, and installation of port lighting system.

Currently, the port agency is in the process of completing 31 projects, including construction of a cruise ship terminal for the Currimao port and a new training center for the PPA in the Manila South Harbor.

Meanwhile, civil and marine work for the Phase II of the Batangas Port is 70-percent complete as of March 25, while the construction of port access road and fly-over was computed at 63-percent complete, or slightly behind schedule.

The agency also disbursed P441.8 million for various landowners whose lots would be used for the port project. The amount includes the voluntary sale and the zonal valuation payment to landowners covered by the expropriation case.

Several cases involving parcels of land in the Batangas Port are still pending at the Supreme Court.

In a related development, port officials flew to China in March to inspect the plant where the equipment will be manufactured. The report said that the required gantry cranes and the rubber-tired gantries “have met the requirements of the contract” and crane manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co., Ltd. will start the construction.

The Phase two of the Batangas Port, which was funded by a loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperated, consists of dredging and reclamation, construction of two foreign container cargo berths, among others.
