AN
American firm is putting up a P2.035-billion wind-diesel
hybrid energy power generation facility in Oriental
Mindoro that will produce 25 megawatts.
The
Philippine Hybrid Energy Systems Inc. (Phesi), a unit of
BreezElectric LLC of the
US,
has set the new power plant’s commercial operation in
January 2010 to supply electricity to the Oriental
Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Ormeco) and Occidental
Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Omeco).
Ormeco
distributes electricity to over 99,000 customers in 421
barangays while Omeco has over 46,000 customers in 135
barangays.
Phesi’s
project will supply approximately 23 percent of
Mindoro’s annual power demand.
The
Board of Investments approved the grant of full
incentives to the project since it falls under the
Investment Priorities Plan’s Energy-Power Generation
using indigenous and renewable energy.
BOI
managing director Elmer Hernandez said projects like
Phesi’s are also eligible for pioneer status. The
project is expected to generate 11 new jobs, substantial
local tax revenue, indirectly create jobs in the
locality, and spur additional revenue for local
contractors.
New
investments and businesses are also expected to follow
as the availability of energy in the two
Mindoro provinces increases.
The
project will also reduce the cost of energy to electric
cooperatives, increase capacity to maintain needed power
supply, improve grid stability, electrify host
communities, and significantly cut greenhouse emissions. |
