  • Cabinet studies ways
    to cut power rates

THE Cabinet Study Group tasked to look into the issue of power rates has created a technical working group to further thresh out the recommendations made by top executives of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) during a meeting on Thursday.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in an interview with reporters that the group’s follow-up meeting with Meralco officials was attended by its president, Jesus Francisco and Christian Monsod, among others.

“As a result of this meeting today, the economic managers will create a technical working group to continue working on the different recommendations with a view of lowering the cost of electricity,” Bunye said.

He said that the time given by the economic managers to hear out the position of Meralco on the power rates issue would “dispute” the insinuation that the government is after Meralco.

“The second meeting held today with Meralco officials is testament to the fact that both parties are looking for ways and means to reduce the cost of electricity,” Bunye said.

Bunye declined to comment on the move of the National Association of Electricity Consumers for Reforms  to file estafa charges against Meralco, saying it is a “purely a legal matter so let our legal processes to prevail and they can settle their questions in court.”

He stressed that the primary objective of the government is to reduce power rates and will not get involved in “boardroom battles” between Meralco management and the Government Service Insurance System.
