The World is a Glass Overflowing Water: Off the coast of Zanzibar, a fishing boat strikes a lonely yet serene figure against the majestic teal hues of the Indian Ocean. There are no tourists here, no loud party music; just the vast expanse of the sea, the sky, and a man eking out a living.

    poetics of memory

Photographer Malcolm George Arevalo mounts his debut exhibit at E Galerie in Serendra, Fort Bonifacio Global City, Taguig from 28 May to 3 June 2008. The exhibit, entitled "Ode to Enchanted Light," features photographs taken during Arevalo's travels to the United States, and to countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Included in the exhibit are a series of photographs of Tanzania's majestic Zanzibar coasts, rolling landscapes and colorful people. Arevalo also documents the ministry of Filipino priest Fr. Eusebio Mangbao and his life with the Maasai, a semi-nomadic African tribe.

The collection of featured photographs was inspired by Pablo Neruda much-celebrated poem, "Ode to Enchanted Light." Arevalo states: "If poetry renders words magical, then photography, as art, renders images poetic." The photographer borrows Neruda's words and offers this exhibit as a thanksgiving to "remember the gifts of the earth."

Malcolm George M. Arevalo was born in Manila, the Philippines, in 1979. He received a Journalism degree from the University of the Philippines in 2001 and a postgraduate diploma in Filmmaking from the New York Film Academy in 2002. For the last eight years, he has worked as a writer educator, eventologist, television producer, and filmmaker. His works have been featured in several local publications, as well as on MTV Asia, Viva Television, and in several ABS-CBN local and international productions.

Arevalo currently shuttles between Manila and New York where he serves on the team of the World Association of Non-Government Organizations (WANGO), liaising with international NGOs, media, and the United Nations.
