THE damage caused by Tropical Storm Cosme to the local farm sector climbed to P1.58 billion, the latest report from the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.

DA data showed that four more provinces in Central Luzon—considered the rice granary of the country—were also affected by the typhoon. Provinces in the region that were affected include Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga and Bataan.

Earlier, the DA reported that Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Mountain Province, Ifugao and Zambales were affected by the weather disturbance.

Damage to high-value commercial crops (HVCCs) was still the highest at P793.15 million. Hardest hit was the mango sector, with losses valued at P 703.74 million.

The fisheries sector in La Union and Pangasinan was the second-biggest casualty of Typhoon Cosme, with losses estimated at P416.87 million.

For vegetables, a total of 3,414 metric tons (MT) valued at P46.38 million was lost. Papaya suffered losses amounting to 410 MT valued at P4.1 million; and banana, 3,310 MT valued at P38.93 million.

Also affected were coconut trees in Zambales covering 47 hectares with chances of recovery. Value of loss was placed at P 2.15 million.

Livestock losses went up to P 4.71 million. Lost were poultry and large animals (cattle, carabaos, swine and goats) from Pangasinan, La Union and Zambales.

Damage to irrigation facilities was placed at P 216.64 million, which covered the areas of the Cordillera Administrative Region, the Ilocos region, and the Upper Pampanga Rivers Irrigation System in Central Luzon.

As of May 26, losses due to flash floods in Visayas and Mindanao amounted to P 103.39 million (previously P 74.32 million) from damage to rice, corn, HVCCs and fisheries.

Affected provinces now include Antique, Iloilo and Negros Occidental in addition to the previously reported provinces of Palawan, South Cotabato and Maguindanao.

HVCC losses amounted to P312,590, while the damage to the fisheries sector was placed at P2.46 million.
