THE
damage caused by Tropical Storm Cosme to the local farm
sector climbed to P1.58 billion, the latest report from
the Department of Agriculture (DA) said.
DA data
showed that four more provinces in
Central Luzon—considered
the rice granary of the country—were also affected by
the typhoon. Provinces in the region that were affected
include Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga and Bataan.
Earlier,
the DA reported that Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet,
Mountain Province, Ifugao and Zambales were affected by
the weather disturbance.
Damage
to high-value commercial crops (HVCCs) was still the
highest at P793.15 million. Hardest hit was the mango
sector, with losses valued at P 703.74 million.
The
fisheries sector in La Union and Pangasinan was the
second-biggest casualty of Typhoon Cosme, with losses
estimated at P416.87 million.
For
vegetables, a total of 3,414 metric tons (MT) valued at
P46.38 million was lost. Papaya suffered losses
amounting to 410 MT valued at P4.1 million; and banana,
3,310 MT valued at P38.93 million.
Also
affected were coconut trees in Zambales covering 47
hectares with chances of recovery. Value of loss was
placed at P 2.15 million.
Livestock losses went up to P 4.71 million. Lost were
poultry and large animals (cattle, carabaos, swine and
goats) from Pangasinan, La Union and Zambales.
Damage
to irrigation facilities was placed at P 216.64 million,
which covered the areas of the Cordillera Administrative
Region, the Ilocos region, and the Upper Pampanga Rivers
Irrigation System in
Central Luzon.
As of
May 26, losses due to flash floods in Visayas and
Mindanao amounted to P 103.39 million (previously P
74.32 million) from damage to rice, corn, HVCCs and
fisheries.
Affected
provinces now include Antique,
Iloilo
and Negros Occidental in addition to the previously
reported provinces of
Palawan,
South Cotabato and Maguindanao.
HVCC
losses amounted to P312,590, while the damage to the
fisheries sector was placed at P2.46 million. |
