OVER the years, Cinderella Marketing Corp. has been committed to corporate social responsibility as one of the pillars in the Philippine garment industry. The company’s logo, the “c”, besides being associated with world-class products and merchandise, and providing choices to consumers, has also come to signify consciousness in its continuous promotion of the welfare of not only its consumers but also the entire community, as well. It was in 1991 when it first launched its “Work with Nature...Not Against It” campaign, which was revived in 2005 as “Be True to your Nature.”

This year Cinderella relaunches its environmental campaign “Work with Nature,” an ecological advocacy in partnership with Bantay Kalikasan’s Save the La Mesa Watershed Project. Cinderella president Arthur Coronel, and director of marketing and communications Malou Coronel-de Venecia recently signed a contract protecting a total of 2 hectares of the La Mesa Watershed for a period of three years, together with the ABS-CBN Foundation director Gina Lopez at the Cinderella Head Office in Quezon City.

In line with this, Cinderella shares its 10 practical tips to “Work with Nature.”

    1. Consumption check. Grown sick and tired of having too much waste in your place? Then it’s time for you to check on your stuff—all that you have, all that you buy, all that you need, and all that you don’t!

    2. Interest and involvement. Looking for a new leisure activity? Maybe you may want to support and join civic organizations advocating for Mother Nature like Greenpeace and the Haribon Foundation. Who knows, you might end up enjoying being socially responsible.

    3. No to inorganic products whenever and wherever possible. Say hello to natural beauty—essentials would be organic shampoo (aloe vera extracts will really do), organic lotion (try the virgin coconut oil), organic toothpaste (bear with salt as in the ancient times), organic deo-whitener (nothing beats the alum), and all other toiletries chemically untreated that you can make use of. They’re a lot better, cheaper and totally earth-friendly.

    4. Develop a vegetarian appetite. It’s never that easy, but for the sake of the animals (including ourselves, to spare us from heart diseases and all), better start kissing your meats goodbye. You definitely won’t regret having the figure Alicia Silverstone showed off in her controversial Peta (People for the Ethical treatment of Animals) ad!

    5.  E is for eco-fashion. It’s the fad now! Even internationally, fashion people are becoming eco-conscious—designers are working with genuine eco-fabrics and eco-materials, like Linda Loudermilk (organic clothing: bamboo, hemp, sea cell, soya, wool, tencel, alpaca, etc.), Stella McCartney (shoes and handbags) and Anya Hindmarch (bags); while even celebrities are already turning out into eco-fashion (some even into eco-jewelry), like Jane Fonda, Teri Hatcher and Sharon Stone. It is apparently not so ironic for these people to be both fashion- and environment-conscious.

    6. R stands for Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. And, oh, also for Refuse! Plastics are commonly used not just in the household but almost everywhere—whether you eat, work, clean, shop and so on. With a little more extra effort from each and everyone, we can reduce using these non-eco-friendly materials. Or the least we can do is to recycle and reuse them. And, of course, we can refuse to use them. Smile and say, “Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t need a plastic bag for my shopping.” Each year, an approximate 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed globally, over 1 million per minute, and billions just end up as litter. Curious about how long it will take for these plastic shopping bags to decay in the landfill? About 25,000 years.

    7. Effect a ‘green’ house. It’s easy—dig the soil and plant. Witness how day-to-day working with your hands will one day turn your home into a full-blown greenhouse beauty that is absolutely anti-global warming. Pleasant to the eyes, too, and good for the lungs!

    8. Liberate your creative mind. Squeeze your inventive mind and let your creative juices flow. Believe it or not, you may surely find treasures out of your trash! For instance, old notebooks and magazines stuck in your trash bin can still be customized into new scrapbooks perfect as friendship keepsakes. With a little more embellishments and an artistic hand, you can even give them away as presents.

    9. Live in austerity, live in alternatives. The simpler, the better. Cliché as it may seem, there is, in reality, no harm in living a simple life. If you can compromise your top preference for a better alternative, then great! Like, why not opt for washable cloth dining wipes instead of disposable tissue papers? Thousands of trees will be saved through this petty act of sacrifice.

    10. Advocate Cinderella’s “Work with Nature” campaign. Avail yourselves of a “Work with Nature” limited-edition bag for only P299 with any purchase at all Cinderella stores nationwide. It’s totally trendy yet eco-friendly. Plus, it suits every casual activity you’re up to for the day, and is also good for parties, picnics and, of course, shopping (made durable even for grocery shopping). Proceeds of the sale of the limited-edition bags will be donated to Bantay Kalikasan.
