    Mango farming alliance bears fruit

DAVAO CITY—The mango production venture formed by a former mango contractor that hit a gold find in chemical distribution and a Middle East-financed buyer based in Cagayan de Oro City is now reaping the success of this union.

Gold Orchard Distribution Inc. (Godi) said its tie-up with Huge Success Agricultural Corp. (HSAC) is “a story of a perfect partnership and growth.”

The Makati-based Godi, with its distribution center based here, tied up with HSAC in January this year with the former providing chemical inputs and technical assistance for the latter’s 50,000 planted mango trees.

“The use of Godi inputs have been a huge success in the contracted farms in Misamis Oriental and, lately, in Panabo, Davao del Norte,” said Leo Villareal, Godi media liaison officer. “And HSAC is happy with the results.”

Godi offers a line of inputs, ranging from plant-growth regulators and flower inducers, to fungicides and pesticides. Villareal said that its most popular product is Green Star 25SC, a brand of plant growth regulator for mango, whose active ingredient is paclubutrazol. “This chemical speeds up the maturity of the mango tree, from eight months of waiting to bear fruit, to only three months,” he said. “This allows growers to harvest twice a year.”

Godi’s tie-up with HSAC is the first long-term business partnership for the company which started operations only in 2003.

The two entities came to know each other through the Godi’s agronomist in the Northern Mindanao area. Godi product manager for Mindanao, Rogelio Gementiza, regularly visited HSAC senior consultant Jaime Nacua to check on how the products worked in their farms.

Last week, Villareal said, HSAC already made an initial harvest of almost 100 tons of mango in Consolacion, Panabo City, after getting a contracting agreement with landowners.

HSAC has also established similar contracting agreements with various farms in Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Caraga and in Panabo, Davao del Norte.

By the rule: Winston Garcia, a market mover

MARKET investors have a lesson to learn from the way Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has suffered as a result of the relentless attack made by Winston Garcia—president, general manager and vice chairman of the board of trustees of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS)—against the company and the Lopezes, who control its board and management. That lesson is: at the first sign of trouble, sell. Or In this case, at Garcia’s initial salvo, sell?
