  • Barakos shoot for
    ‘W’ No. 8 against Tigers

Red Bull has set its sight on win No. 8 as the Barakos resume their campaign in the 2008 Smart-Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Cup against a team trying to rebound from two disappointing defeats.

Coming off a well-deserved four-day rest, the Barakos (7-3) are lucky enough to find themselves in the lead—thanks to the Purefoods TJ Giants, who dealt erstwhile coleader Talk ’N Text Phone Pals an 84-79 decision on Wednesday.

They will try to capitalize on that break by coming up with a key win against the Coca-Cola Tigers in their 4:50 p.m. rematch at the Araneta Coliseum.

Red Bull defeated Coca-Cola, 82-75, in their first meeting of the conference on April 30.

The 6-4 Tigers, who had not played in a week, have an opportunity to tie for the lead, but they have been struggling lately, going 1-3 in their last four games and ending that stretch with back-to-back losses against Alaska and Air21.

In an effort to get back on the winning track, coach Binky Favis has placed Gee Gervin on the reserve list in favor of Donald Copeland.

The five-foot-nine Copeland was Favis’s first choice as reinforcement, but a previous engagement kept him from signing up with Coke.

To improve on its 5-4 record to stay in contention for an outright playoff spot will be the target of reigning Philippine Cup champion Sta. Lucia Realty when it battles unpredictable Welcoat in the other match scheduled for 7:20 p.m.

The Realtors have gone 2-4 in their last six assignments but are expected to repeat over the Dragons, who have yet to show consistency in their game.

Sta. Lucia dealt Welcoat a 111-97 rout in the first meeting on May 4.

Welcoat holds a 3-7 record but their victims include elite teams such as Magnolia, Purefoods and Talk ’N Text.
