FILIPINOS how have an alternative to carbonated drinks, caffeinated beverages and sugar-laden fruit juices. Sydenham Laboratories Inc. (SLI), a domestic pharmaceutical firm, launched its newest product called Peak.

Jacob Peña, SLI chief executive officer, said Peak will be marketed as a stress-reducer plus energy- and memory-booster health drink. “Peak is a three-in-one health drink formulated to give busy and mobile professionals, as well as individuals with stressful lifestyles, three major benefits—reduced stress levels, more energy and enhanced memory,” said Peña.

Nina Peña, SLI marketing manager, said the key nutrients in Peak are L-carnitine and taurine. L-carnitine is an amino acid used by the human body to turn excess fat into energy, while taurine is like a memory cell that helps sharpen mental and visual faculties.

Edwin Bien, medical director of Amezcua Wellness Centre in White Plains, Quezon City, said L-carnitine protects us against free-radical formation, while taurine helps produce “calming” chemicals.

Peak also contains vitamins A, C and E, and zinc which strengthen the immune system while the iodine content stimulates mental function and physical development.

The introduction of Peak as an antistress drink, according to SLI, is very significant during these times when stress is experienced by everyone. “Stress is part of work and having a career. It is unavoidable,” said Nina Peña.

SLI believes that being a company that specializes in the production of vitamins and medicines makes them sufficiently equipped to manufacture a drink with health benefits.

Since its establishment in 1951, SLI has been producing medicines such as antibiotics, metformin for diabetes, metoprolol for cardiovascular diseases, as well as vitamins and health supplements.

In 2004 SLI also ventured into the cleaning chemical business and further expanded its business into beverages in 2005 through the Juslicious brand. A year after, it launched a health drink for kids called Jus’ 4 Kids.

Peak—which comes in mango and dalandan flavors—is the second product under the Juslicious brand.
