Bacnotan to go into BPO business

BACNOTAN Consolidated Industries Inc. is putting up a business-process outsourcing (BPO) venture this year, saying it’s not yet late in the game for them to enter this field.

At the sidelines of the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting Thursday, company president Ramon del Rosario Jr. said their planned entry into BPO can be realized by either acquiring an ongoing operation or by building up their own.

“We are looking at two fronts—architecture and engineering, and accounting. The plan is not so clear yet. But if we decide to start this year, it will initially be on a modest scale,” said del Rosario.

Asked why the company chose to go into BPO as the next venture, he said: “We think it is an industry with a bright future for the Philippines. This is the type of operation that blends to our type of skills and strength. We also believe that it is a good mechanism for creating employment.”

Bacnotan, whose shares are traded at the stock exchange, holds interests in the housing, steel, financial services, mining, energy and education sectors.

An analyst from a foreign brokerage house told the BusinessMirror the decision of Bacnotan to enter into the BPO industry is a valid move.

The venture is still in that “window,” the analyst added, given the vast prospects the BPO sector presents.

Bacnotan ended 2007 with a net income of P330.4 million and revenues of P2.8 billion.
